Interdependent Magic: Disability Performance in Canada is a collection of four plays and an interview. Jess Watkin edited it. Jess is a Blind artist, scholar, and Disability dramaturg in Toronto. She also founded the FUTURES Book Club.
What is inside
The book gathers work by, for, and about Disabled theatre artists.
- Smudge by Alex Bulmer follows a woman’s journey toward Blindness, and what her other senses give back.
- Access Me by Boys in Chairs Collective is a celebration of sex, queerness, and Disability.
- Antarctica by Syrus Marcus Ware imagines racialized people surviving catastrophe and terraforming a new colony.
- Deafy by Chris Dodd follows a Deaf public speaker figuring out what belonging actually means.
There is also an interview with artist Niall McNeil, plus an opening section on Disability culture, language, and Disability justice.
You do not need theatre training to read any of it.
Why we picked it
Plays put you inside a room with people instead of inside an argument. That changes the conversation we get to have about them.
This one also comes from our own community. Jess built the Book Club, and this is the book she built before it.
How to get a copy
Playwrights Canada Press publishes it in paperback, PDF, EPUB, and audiobook. Every registered member gets a copy in the format they pick. Tell us at registration whether you want audio or digital.

FUTURES Book Club runs September 2026 to February 2027. Sessions are the second and fourth Monday of the month, 6:00 to 8:00 pm ET, on Zoom. There is ASL interpretation at every session, plus recordings and transcripts afterwards. It is free for anyone 18 to 30 in Canada.
